Blogging from Big H

Check out the new blog "I Am Sitting In A Room" by Jason, fellow resident of America's fourth largest city.  Thanks to Robert Gable at aworks for the heads up.

Leroux_1I may check out Monday's Houston Symphony performance of Bluebeard's Castle.  François LeRoux has a voice I'm particularly fond of, and the lighting stunt sounds like it could be kinda neato.

I heard a broadcast of the Houston Symphony playing Brahms' Double Concerto last night with the brothers Capuçon (Renaud and Gautier) - the orchestra sounded great, especially in the finale.  A nice, fat sound with excellent rhythmic punch when needed.  I've been a bit bummed about Hans Graf's mostly conservative programming, but with playing like that I might be tempted to attend.  I'll definitely be there for the premiere of Richard Lavenda's Clarinet Concerto in May.

Incidentally, any Houstonians reading this should try to catch one of Michael Mizrahi’s recitals this weekend.  He won the 29th Ima Hogg Competition (HSO’s young artists contest) and played Beethoven’s third concerto here in September.  He’s performing two recitals this weekend – Saturday at the Virtuosi of Houston’s Studio and Sunday at the First Unitarian Universalist Church (in the Museum district).

Finally, an anecdote from a friend in New Haven that is one of the funniest erroneous program listings I've ever seen or heard of.  The piece is "O, how amiable" by Ralph Vaughan Williams.  It was listed in the bulletin as "O, how am I able, Ralph?" by Vaughan Williams.  From that you can deduce what the first line of text ("For a long time, I have held my peace") was printed as.

Marcus, thanks so much for the plug and space among the heavy hitters on your blogroll!

Is there a site with more info. on Mizrahi's recitals this weekend (time, ticket cost, program)? The venue links have nothing.
